Trump: Green Cards for all students in the USA?

Presidential candidate Donald Trump is not known for his relaxed immigration policies. However, in a podcast, he presented a plan to give Green Cards to US university graduates. The proposal is causing a stir.

Green Cards as a reward for graduation

During the famous All-In podcast in Silicon Valley, Donald Trump was asked for an answer on how to keep more highly skilled workers in the country legally in the future.

Trump replied: "What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma, a Green Card to be able to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges, too."

The last part in particular has attracted attention, as junior college graduates in the US receive a so-called "associate degree" after only two years of study in the USA. Trump went one step further and claimed that he wanted to implement this regulation on "Day 1 of his presidency."

How credible is Trump's claim?

Currently, around one million foreigners a year receive a US Green Card, based on various pillars of the immigration system. These include, for example, the Green Card for family reunions, the Green Card via the workplace, or the famous Green Card Lottery.

Adding another million international students per year would be a very spontaneous and drastic change to US immigration law and a huge additional burden on government agencies. But that is not the only reason why the unusual proposal has been met with criticism and doubt — even from within his own ranks.

Trump's campaign committee backtracked just hours later, announcing that only the best graduates would receive Green Cards after an unspecified selection process. At the same time, US immigration experts doubted the sincerity of the statement and warned against romanticizing studying in the US without a Green Card in the first place.

Attentive observers also noted that Trump's former opponent Hillary Clinton had already made a similar proposal during the 2016 election campaign, which Trump now presented in the podcast in a slightly modified form.

Before you study: apply for a Green Card!

According to US immigration experts, the Green Card would be a hard-earned "reward" for good studies, as the average annual tuition for foreign students is currently almost $30,000. However, the expensive "out-of-state tuition" is reduced by almost two-thirds to the more affordable "in-state tuition" of less than $10,000 for Americans who live in the respective state or students who hold a Green Card.

So if you already have a Green Card before you start your studies in the USA, you will save a lot of money. Fortunately, the dream of a US immigrant visa is not only achievable with money, hard work, or family in the USA but also via the Green Card Lottery organized annually by the US government.

Every year, 55,000 people are allowed to immigrate to the USA and live, study, and work there without restriction after winning the Green Card Lottery. The application process only takes a few minutes, and the chances of winning are exorbitant.
